Latinboxing catches up with Steven Luevano(33-1) the current WBO Featherwieght Champion as he prepares for his fight with Antonio Davis this Saturday.
By Joe Hammond

Antonio Davis has a plight on his record: a point deducted for use of the elbows in a fight he won, how will you deal with that?

Well the first time I fought a guy like that he was called “Brochas”…Martin Hernandez, he gave us a lot of trouble with those tactics. Now I’ve learned from my trainers. I’m prepared for that if he tries it.

Can you break down for us and our readers what’s your average day of training like?

I usually run in the morning at 7 am and then I come to the chiropractor and work with them. I also use the oxygen chamber. I’m usually finished by 11:30 and then I do my

core strength training and finish by 12 or 12:30.

Then I’m at the Gym by 5 to do our work out. Spar and hitting the bag and the Mitts

at the gym.

How is the training for this fight different from the training for Nicky cook?

I’ve trained the same for Antonio Davis as I did for Nicky Cook. I’m training eight weeks.

In your fight with Nicky Cook, you went to the body frequently and used your jab well. This made it a easy night for you, is that the plan for Antonio Davis?

Antonio Davis is Antonio Davis. I’m just going to do what I do and just box and take my time.

Do you watch tape of your opponents?

They were supposed to send one to me. I never got it and it doesn’t really matter they [my opponents] don’t fight the same fight over again.

What’s your prediction for your performance in this fight?

I don’t know much about Antonio Davis what he’s going to be able to do to avoid me and how much he can take. I’m training for a 12 round fight and I’m figuring it’s going to go all 12 rounds

The Nicky Cook fight in which you snatched the WBO title was the biggest of your career thus far. What was it like going to England? Into London, the lion’s den so to speak for your first fight overseas?

The British were all very nice I didn’t think they thought I was just there to loose.

There were posters of the fight all over town but, I wasn’t on it(laughs). The fight

Was at the O2 Arena, it was done by the same guy’s who built the staples center.

Our fight was the biggest sporting event in that dome since it opened. I was never nervous though, my whole amateur career I went different places and fought different

guys on their turf.

Before the fight Nicky Cook pretty much said he was going to make “Pie

Pie n’ mash of you, what did you think of that?

He was said he was just going to take me out and bully me. But, he saw pretty

early on in the fight that wasn’t going to happen.

The British fans how did they react after the fight? Nicky Cook was undefeated

before you knocked him down five times in route to your dramatic win?

They were nice about it they congratulated me. We left the next day we were there for a whole week [in London] we did a little sightseeing walked around town.

What do you want for your future after this fight?

A fight down the road with a better name opponent, someone everyone knows and respects. Nobody knows who Nicky Cook was. The people just say “ you just fought a guy from England” that’s all. So clearly I need another big fight to really put my name out there. It really doesn’t matter who, It won’t be Chris John…he won’t fight out of his country[Indonesia].

How did you get into boxing?

I was 6, My cousin Frankie Carmona he was in it and my grandfather got him into boxing. Soon after my other cousin Marshal Martinez and then me and my brother got into it .

Who were your boxing heroes growing up?

Obviously, Julio Cesar Chavez…his image and they way he presented himself

He was not just a person he was as an icon…stylistically Pernell Whitaker’s style of boxing. His movement and everything he did since I’m a left handed south paw I look to him a lot coming up.

Tell us a little about your extensive amateur career?

I was 287-20 and I won several national titles. Four silver gloves,

2 jr. golden gloves, 2 under 19 titles, 1 golden glove, 2 PALS and

I was also an Olympic Alternate.

Whose your pick in the main event of your fight? Pacquiao vs. Barrera?

I like Barrera… I don’t know I just might think Pacquiao will take. I hope he doesn’t…I’m rooting for Barrera

Having fought an English fighter recently whose your pick on Mayweather vs. Hatton?

Mayweather clearly, I think that Mayweather is just a little to smart for Ricky Hatton.
