Quick Pick: Bernard Hopkins vs. Winky Wright
By Joe Hammond
This fight has it all: two of the greatest
practitioners of the fight game of the last 10 years.
Both with pin point technical accuracy and a string of
impressive victories over name opponents means more
than likely that the July 21st bout between the two
former champions could easily disappointment: given
there styles it will likely be more of a snooze fest
than a slugfest.
Both fighters have shrugged off the pressure to be
risky in big fights before and have very tactical
styles and excellent defense. By comparison this fight
should make De La Hoya vs. Mayweather look like a
Barrera-Morales fight.
Winky Wright is a great student of the game, a human
fortress, and if I must say
he is usually one of the better dressed people in the
fight game. None of that will help him
against a savvy vetrano like B-hop.
At the age of 42, Hopkins is always one punch of
getting old in heartbeat. Yet
Hopkins his a gym rat who always keeps himself in
amazing condition. Winky
Wright who is coming up to face Hopkins is hardly the
type of fighter one would suspect could
test the chin of Bernard Hopkins if he failed really
hurt Felix Trinidad who has a notoriously
suspect chin( and is contemplating a comeback).
Comparatively fighting a prime Trinidad,
Bernard Hopkins scored a convincing late round
stoppage after establishing
a healthy lead in a very tactical fight.
In his recent fight with Tarver, Hopkins made Tarver
look silly at times
something that is unlikely to happen against a boxer
of Wright's ability. Wright is to slick
to get caught with a big punch and suffer the
consequences as well. Rather it is
far more likely that Hopkins will fight a tactical
fight look for his openings. Both fighters
will find it difficult to penetrate the others defense
in the early rounds but as the bout
continues Hopkins size and experience should lead him
to a win on all judge’s scorecards.
